Small Sacrifices--The Diane Downs Story

Diane Downs

On May 19, 1983, Elizabeth Diane Frederickson Downs shot her three children: Christie,8, Cheryl, 7, and Stephen, 4. She told police that she had been carjacked. Cheryl did not survive. She also shot herself in the left arm to try to make her story believable.Downs had been having an affair with a man named Robert Knickerbocker, who had let it be known that he did not want children in his life.

On June 17, 1984, Downs was found guilty of murder, attempted murder and assault. She was sentenced to life in prison plus 50 years. Christie and Stephen were adopted by Prosecutor Fred Hugi and his wife Joanne.

The 1989 made-for-TV movie stars Farrah Fawcett as Diane Downs. In the movie, the names of the children have been changed. Christie is Karen, Cheryl is Shawna, and Stephen is Robbie.

  1. that is a one sick woman how could do that to your kids.

  2. Only an idiot would stop for a stranger.I would never ever put my kids in that kind of danger and if anyone ever did attempt to try to hurt my kids I'd f**ckin kill them cause if they were gonna hurt my kids they'ed have to go through me first!

  3. Diane's son was named Stephen Daniel, but everyone called him Danny. Diane's baby daughter Rebecca was the child she had to put up for adoption and Rebecca doesn't want anyone to know she came from a monster.

    2. Considering Rebecca has made multiple appearances on television shows ranging from 20/20 to Oprah where she has openly spoken about her life, her family, and the results of reaching out to her birth mother, Diane Downs, I believe it is very erroneous to write a statement suggesting that Rebecca doesn't want anyone to know she comes from a monster.
